But what is microdermabrasion exactly, and how does it work? Read on for everything you need to know about this revolutionary skincare procedure!

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a dermatological procedure performed by skincare professionals that aims to remove the uppermost layer of skin from your face or body, including the neck, chest, back, and hands. It can help to even out skin tones, brighten dull complexions, fade acne scars, and more! While microdermabrasion might not be for everyone, there are a plethora of benefits, and the downsides are extremely minimal. However, it does require an experienced practitioner with specialized medical devices and you may need more than one treatment for optimal results.

Benefits of Microdermabrasion

As we mentioned, microdermabrasion has several benefits which has earned it a reputation as a fantastic cosmetic procedure. Microdermabrasion can improve the appearance and feel of your skin by creating a youthful look and a smooth, clean complexion. It can also help new skin cells grow, thicken collagen to keep your skin firm, and reveal newer, undamaged skin, while simultaneously making certain skin conditions less noticeable, including:

  • Stretch marks
  • Sun damage
  • Mild to moderate scars, such as those from acne
  • Age spots
  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Skin discoloration
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Enlarged pores and blackheads

Downsides to Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a safe dermatological procedure and does not have serious side effects or risks. It is critical, however, to discuss this procedure with your doctor or healthcare provider if you have acne, open wounds, freckles, moles, skin tags, growths, frequent rashes, cold sores, skin conditions (such as eczema or psoriasis), or take medication for any skin conditions.

Some individuals may notice minor side effects including:

  • Flaky or dry skin
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight
  • Discoloration or darkened skin in the treated area
  • Bruising which lasts for a few days after the procedure
  • Burning sensation that feels like a light sunburn

It is recommended, therefore, to wear sunscreen and lotion after the procedure.

How Microdermabrasion Works

There are two main types of microdermabrasion procedures: crystal microdermabrasion and diamond microdermabrasion. The former uses microfine crystals shot from a small tube onto your skin which are then simultaneously vacuumed back up along with dead skin cells. The latter is a crystal-free version that uses a diamond-tipped tool to exfoliate the skin – the diamond tip “sands down” the skin and then vacuums the dead skin cells. Both procedures are highly effective at exfoliating the skin and are gentle.

The first step will include consulting with the aesthetician who will perform the procedure to go over your particular goals for having microdermabrasion done. At this time, feel free to ask any questions that you may have about the process or results, such as the expected number of treatments, the expected results, and what, if any, the recovery process will be like.

You will then undergo the microdermabrasion procedure that will last 30-60 minutes, though you may need more than one treatment, scheduled 7-14 days apart, to get your desired results. Some patients may get as many as six to ten treatments in total. You may go home right after the procedure and no antiseptic is required – side effects will be short-lived, but your skin may be dry or flaky for a day or two after the procedure. Try to avoid direct sunlight while your skin is recovering.

Microdermabrasion Results

For many people, the results of brighter, glowing skin can be realized after just the first treatment! It’s common for your skin to be a bit pink after the session, but this will only last for a few hours. It is important to know that your skin is constantly going through a regenerative process, continually sloughing off dead skin cells and forming new, healthy ones. Microdermabrasion benefits, such as smooth, sleek skin, will therefore last around 40 to 50 days before your skin turnover process completes again. However, you can help the benefits of microdermabrasion last even longer if you use daily sun protection. Finally, follow-up treatments are usually recommended every four to six weeks to maintain your results!
